Now for my View:
There are books and then there are BOOKS!
There are tales and then there are TALES!
And Sirens Spell Danger is a remarkable BOOK
with not one, but three intriguing TALES!
‘Sirens Spell Danger’, I must insist at the very onset, is an assortment of fascinating thrillers from the pens of three gifted
Indian bloggers C. Suresh, Radha Sawana and Karthik L. Anything I write about their storytelling caliber would be an
understatement. But I’d still say this; the brilliance of the plots that they have
so skillfully woven into riveting thrillers is a rarity, atleast in the current
Indian Literary scene.
After
reading this remarkable collection of novellas I must say I can’t wait for the
next installment from their desks. Ofcourse, it also makes you realize that
knitting a tale isn’t cake walk. Reading the yield of the sheer brilliance
from their pens tells you what fiction writing is actually all about. The
twists and turns and the characterization of each story has undeniably made ‘Sirens Spell Danger’ one of my
favourite books ever.
Femme
Fatale is the novella the book begins with. Written by C. Suresh it begins in
true Suresh style with the opening line 'How could I have known that merely turning to ogle at a lovely girl would lead me into so much danger?' And there are some 'Suresh-isms' that make this story a gripping read for me, like when the male protagonist says 'Whoever heard of proposing a girl with a basket of oranges?' You would know what I mean if you have been a regular reader
of his blog! This absolutely serious plot has its humorous moments too. Femme Fatal is unquestionably un-put-down-able with its characters, surprise elements and narration. It is certainly an apt opening for the
book.
The
next story in the book ‘Bella Donna’ is by Radha Sawana. I must admit that this is my favourite among the three. Radha is
brilliant. There is no other way I can describe her for the story and the detailing is absolutely mesmerizing.
The research she seems to have put in the tale is awe inspiring. I think she should stop whatever she is doing right now and take up
writing as her full time profession. I can't wait to read her next book!
The
book ends with Karthik L’s tale ‘Bellary’.
It is a crime thriller set in Bellary
and this one has two sirens instead of one! And you end up wondering who among
the two would be the one to spell danger. Just when you begin to get
comfortable in it being about a spy investigating a matter of national interest,
Karthik spins a surprise. It’s intriguing how he adds a supernatural element to
the tale and takes it to a different level altogether. Bellary is definitely the right tale to end this collection with.
What
can I say? I’m totally smitten by this book. The moment I was done with reading
the three stories I wished there would be more.
So
what are you waiting for? Grab your copy soon and I promise you won’t be
disappointed at all. It is one of the best books I have read in 2013.
